Thanksgiving…
A day of rest, relaxation and overindulgence, and the last day before our annual Christmas surge of Santa suit rentals and sales, and Santa wigs and beards sales and all the other Christmas costumes and accessories.
Thanksgiving…
The day before all the office, church, school, organization and association Christmas parties begin prepping for the first 2 or three weeks of December.
The Snowmen are clean, the Reindeer are groomed. The Toy Soldiers are lined up in a row. Elf suits galore, as are Santa Belles and Mrs. Santa’s. A Nutcracker or two.
Not to forget the array of Christmas Carol characters, Scrooge, Bob Cratchitt and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.
We have white eyebrows and glasses and makeup for rosy red lips and cheeks for Santa; and gloves, and even padding, too. You forgot the Santa bells (not the Santa Belles) to ring out when Santa arrives? We have them as well.
But for Thursday , A couple of we Pilgrims and a scattering of Native American friends will be breaking bread, followed by an afternoon of college and professional football. Hmmmm….I don’t remember football games in ’21….1621, that is..

Stage and Theatre Makeup! For Christmas and All Year Round!
Stage makeup is more than lathering on a heavy layer of grease paint or pancake; or applying your mascara on heavier than usual, so that you aren’t washed out looking under the bright lights on stage.
Stage makeup might include making a ‘Rudolph’ nose out of nose putty or adding prosthetic ears for one of Santa’s elves, or anything else that might be ‘face-altering’ so as to achieve a specific look.
Some brands of stage makeup are better than others. Most stage makeup is Hypo-Allergenic (but check the label to be certain). In our former life in the brick and mortar costume retail business, we sold ‘Mehron’ and ‘Ben Nye’ brands, along with a couple that no longer exist.
For a general makeup book, you might want to review ‘Stage Makeup’ by Richard Corson. Hopefully you can find it at your local library, as it is a little pricey.
Famous Couples Costumes
What exactly is a famous couple? Oh! You mean like Henry XIII and whatever wife he was married to in any given year? Or Sonny and Cher? Adam and Eve, of course, is the original first famous couple. A couple (or a few) fig leaves for the couple is all you need. A new and refreshing idea, yet millions of years old, inexpensive and likely not to be on your costumer’s shelf for sale. Find a tree, find a few leaves and have a pot of paste handy. And talk about sexy!!!

Famous couple are not always famous couples in the boy-girl sense. Paired costumes could also be like Laurel and Hardy, King Kong and Fay Wray, or a Keystone Cop and Convict from the silent movies. A Beer Bottle and a Beer Bottle Opener.
Pairs, but not necessarily couples.

Sexy Devils, sexy angels, sexy witches, sexy cats, sexy nurses! Sexy! Sexy! Sexy!
And most have one thing in common, cleavage and/or legs.
One’s figure might be factored into this sexy equation. Sometimes the wrong form in the wrong costume might be a formula for dis-ass-ter. And even if one’s figure is not that of an hour glass, then a little camouflaging might be in order.
An old friend used to say “Don’t give ‘em the whole show”. Agreed! A little cleavage and a nicely turned ankle oft times is much more alluring than near nudity.
With a nip and a tuck here and there, almost any kind of costume can be converted into a ‘sexy this or sexy that’.
Fishnet hose or fishnet tights are usually an integral part of a sexy costume. One word of caution. Always wear mesh tights or hose with a seam in the back, and to make sure that seam is straight. I’m sure you have a ‘significant other’ that will volunteer to make sure that seam is straight, while casting an admiring glance.
Personality Plays a Part!
Under the guise of a mask, makeup or a costume, you can be your own alter ego.
Are you the quiet, shy, retiring type? Are you happy to be in the background; but yet yearning to be the life of the Halloween party? Perhaps a hot, peppery Spanish dancer with a hint of cleavage, and a rose between your teeth. Or Lorelei, the siren of the seas, luring sailors with her hypnotic voice? Perhaps a Saloon Girl from the bawdy West or Mae West, a bawdy lady from the movies? And not to forget Scarlett O’Hara.
Are you an outgoing, Type A personality who always draws attention, no matter the venue? Wearing a costume that is opposite your personality is an option. Going as Sister Mary, or as a virginal ‘Marian the Librarian’ (from ‘The Music Man’). Comedy, ala a pairing with your significant other, as in a pair of jailbirds; or Rag Dolls like ‘Raggedy Ann and Andy’. Or opposites as in Satan and a beautiful angel? Laurel and Hardy make a great cinematic and party team.

NO, It’s Today!
Christmas is now here, with its array of costumed characters. Of course, Santa is our December star, but he needs a lot of help from Mrs. Santa, the elves, Dancer and Prancer and the rest of the reindeer and a few Santa Belles. Brrrr….it’s cold, but our Snowman is happy with the weather.
And the season abounds with Tin Soldiers, and Nutcrackers and Toy costumes of every kind. Not to mention “The Nutcracker” and “A Christmas Carol” costumes.
And how do we know all about costumes? We have been in business for 149 years (since 1860). Our origin goes back to the James Buchanan presidency (the one before Abraham Lincoln). That’s a long time ago, although none of us are quite that old .
